Values Education at AJIS
Around the world, children are
affected by the way they treat and are treated by others. This includes
physical, mental and social behavior. Values education in school
reaches out beyond that of academics to speak to the character of
children. At A-JIS, we have a shared commitment with families to build
social and moral character in our students. We have chosen to adopt the
Living Values Education Program(LVEP) founded by Diane Tillman and
Diana Hsu as a guideline for implementation of a school wide values
program. This is an internationally used curriculum supported by UNESCO
and UNICEF and whose purpose is:
“...to provide guiding
principles and tools for the development of the whole person,
recognizing that the individual is comprised of physical, intellectual,
emotional, and spiritual dimensions.”
http://www.livingvalueseducation.orgAs we strive to have
citizens with sincere and pure minds who are contributors to the
continually emerging global world and builders of international
friendships, values education offers students positive experiences and
empowering choices. Through the guidelines of LVEP, students explore a
set of core values which include: peace, respect, love, tolerance,
honesty, humility, cooperation, happiness, responsibility, simplicity,
freedom, and unity. This is a school-wide initiative which includes all
grade levels and school departments. The program is facilitated through
weekly formal values lessons and an integration throughout the
curriculum.
At A-JIS, the values program includes:
Monthly values assemblies
Teaching conflict resolution strategies to the children
Building self-esteem
Classroom Conferences
Creating a safe environment for all
Explicitly teaching a value through interactive lessons
Modeling and demonstrating the values we expect from the children
The
values program is student centered with a focus for students to
internalize the values and demonstrate them through kindness, empathy,
and tolerance for all. As always, we strive for our students to “Be The
Best They Can Be”.
