Intensive School

Grades 1 to 9
Suginami Campus

The Intensive English School at A-JIS a unique parallel program offered at A-JIS for emerging language learners not yet able to enter the Mainstream Program. The Intensive School is a self-contained ESL program, where students receive scaffolded support from ESL trained teachers. Teachers use and teach research based strategies to advance learning based on the standards based mainstream curriculum. Intensive students receive instruction in the content areas with teachers from the respective departments.

Intensive School math classes follow the mainstream curriculum and divide students by math levels in each section (Upper Intensive, Middle Intensive, Lower Intensive). In all other specialized subject areas (Science, PE, Computer, Music, Art, Japanese), Intensive students receive instruction with their homerooms, and are taught by the respective specialized subject teachers according to the mainstream curriculum. Students are transferred to mainstream classes upon the acquisition of the language skills necessary and the attainment of the assessment benchmarks.

The Intensive School is beginning, intermediate and advance language learners are grouped according to age and language level and receive intensive instruction in the five primary areas of English (reading, writing, speaking, listening and grammar). While Intensive courses are primarily focused on English instruction, students regularly receive academic preparation in all areas of study including math, science, social studies, art, music, physical education and computer science. The language of instruction in all classes is English.

The Intensive School Program strives to rapidly integrate students into the Mainstream Program through qualified and experienced teachers, small class sizes and strong academic programs. A-JIS is committed to the development of well-rounded, global thinking students, and our Intensive Program clearly displays that spirit of internationalism.

Students are initially placed as follows:

Lower Intensive (LI)

Students in grades 1, 2, and 3 are placed in this program.

Middle Intensive (MI)

Students in grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 are placed in this program.

Upper Intensive (UI)

Students in grades 7, 8 & 9 are placed in this program.

Our goal in the Intensive School is to facilitate successful student learning through a data driven, based approach to knowledge acquisition that meets the social, academic, technological and linguistic needs of 21st Century international citizens. Furthermore, we strive to be among the world leaders on the cutting edge in second language acquisition best practices in action. We adhere to the belief that learning is in itself a way of life by continuously developing professionally at all levels within the school, and by modeling good manners and best practices that develop a comprehensive, healthy and safe learning community in which children’s natural enthusiasm to learn is fostered.

Our aim is a parent that says their child wants to come to school because it’s a safe and happy place, full of warm, caring and polite people. We want visitors to see that learning is everywhere, exciting, surprising and continuous; hallways filled with colorful, imaginative, real life examples, and the incessant hum of children communicating and learning permeating the air.

We strive to facilitate the education of our students by leading them towards the development of their unlimited talents and abilities and subsequent contributions to the world. Through a first class education that embraces the richness and beauty of the Japanese culture, the Intensive School focuses on student learning by believing and living the credo that students can be all that they can be.
